While that title sounds like another old foagie trying to mar the internet as a porno-pedaphile-producing cesspool, it's actually about something that I find irrefutably heinous: Government censorship. In the article, Wallace Wang explains how government censorship can change people's points of view (which goes without saying), and how the world's governments fear the internet because it empowers us to receive uncensored information from many different views. But just how does this affect us? Well, think of it like this: Under normal censorship, the government screens the media for what it finds "objectionable," and changes the per- spective of the facts to match that of the government. Now, consider for a moment that the government realizes that there is a whole medium out there that it cannot possibly even attempt to censor: the internet. Because there are so many ways that the information can be received, the government cannot possibly hope to find and root out everything it doesn't like. Thus, this brings me to an example presented in Wang's article. "Recently the controversy surrounding open communication has surfaced again. The British police claim that details of security installations in Northern Ireland wound up on the Internet, placed there by supporters of Sinn Fein, the political wing of the Irish Republican Army. According to the Reuters News Service, 'Information posted includes de- tails about British army intelligence installations, mili- tary bases and police stations.' "British Parliament member Andrew Hunter ... said he planned to raise Sinn Fein's use of the Internet with the British government, adding, 'It sounds horrifying. I had no idea Sinn Fein was using the Internet.'" Note Hunter's quote. Wang goes on later: "Sinn Fein disputes claims that they've published secret information about British military installations on their web page. The party claims that this so-called 'secret information' is nothing more than data previously available in their own publication called 'The British Military Garr- ison in Ireland,' first printed in September 1994." Now, if this information was previously available in printed form in Ireland, why should the British government get upset about them putting it on the Internet. Hunter's quote says it all: "I had no idea Sinn Fein was using the Internet." With that information available to a much wider audi- ence, along with many other documents published by and about Sinn Fein, the British government is suddenly scared. Why? Because now people can draw their own conclusions. It is no longer easy for the British to paint their own terrorist account of the IRA as they have before. Now people can read the IRA's own side of the story, and make decisions for themselves. That power to make decisions and perspectives is what makes governments fear the internet. Personally, I think it's great. No longer will I be spoon fed by the gov- ernment tainted media. I have my own power, my own power to point and click my way to what I want to see, not what the government wants me to see. Stay true to the internet, folks. It's our last reliable source of inform- ation. If we lose it, we're bound to see visions of 1984 bouncing through our heads... -- 07.07.1996 References: http://www.serve.com/rm/sinnfein/releases/pr032596.html Wang, Wallace. First of all, one thing around 817 that everyone seems to know is that niphty little trick called the ringback. You know, where you dial 971 2_# and hang up twice and it makes the phone ring. Middle Skewl punks like to use this to look "cool" for their friends. What most people don't seem to know is that this is one end of a Loop. I know it's not a standard 7-digit phone _# like most loops, but it is one. The other end, however, IS a 7-digit phone _# which leads me to wonder about this particular loop. The High End to this Loop is 955-9501, where the Low End is the 971 2_# ringback. Simply call the 955 _#, and it rings. It may ring for a good hour before some punk tries the ringback to look kewl, but they won't seem so kewl when the get connected to you right after dialing 971. A nice thing to do that I've found is to tell the kid you're the phone company or something, and that what he's doing is illegal. Simply phuck with him. Anyway, the discovery of this has brought me to the prefix 955. I never even thought about exploring this prefix, but lately in 817 someone brought up the numbers 955-99XX, which brings up various SWB messages/error messages, as well as a few other niphty things, such as 955-9906 which seems to turn off your phone line for about 1 minute. This prefix (955) seems worth investigating a little more, and maybe I'll put what I find out in the next CAU zine if there's room. But anyway, on to other things. It seems that Phreaking is more popular right now than Hacking/systems, with all the cell phraud and boxing going on in 817. I try to provide scans of various prefixes to try to sway some people back to the Hacking world. But nonetheless, phreaking is the "big thing" right now. If you're into Beige Boxing, I have found that alot of ass-holes that I don't like seem to like giving their money to the Red Cross via their Donation Hotline, which just happens to be fully automated, and that you can just happen to find at 1-900-444-4444, and also just happens to be totally toll-free (until you press a button on your keypad, that is). Also interesting is the infamous 911 Backdoors, found at 338-730X, and seems to not have the standard 911 ANI on those lines. Also phun in the Beige Boxing world is the world of Teleconferencing, such as the DefCon Voicebridge, found at 1-801-855-3326. Of cource you could simply set one up yourself for you and youre k-reet friends, by using something such as the Alliance Teleconference Setup (1-700-456-1000) or the AT&T Teleconferencing Setup Line (1-800-232-1234), both of which the teleconferences can be billed to the line that you are calling from. I won't go into detail about /HOW/ to set up the teleconference, as I'm sure that you can figure it out since the operators are usually about as brilliant as a Saint Bernard, and will walk you through the whole thing, unless they feel unuasually bitchy that night. Also pretty niphty (if you like making phun of gangsta-homey-g's like I do) is the entire 650 prefix. Just pick up the phone and dial 650-XXXX and listen to a g-string-money-clip talk their gangsta talk atcha, and leave them a nice message. 650 brought me to the prefix 651, which is an entire prefix of pagers. As well as 414... This was discovered by Crimson Assassin after the release of my Pageit (v.2.2) program. Oh, and just for phun... here's Taco Bell's dialup: 817-281-8203 Anyway, I'm getting tired, as it is 3:00 am, and I have to werk tommorrow. So enjoy the phree inpho, and don't get caught... I)ruid [CAU817] -- Trashing Bell -===================================- SWB Operators A few weeks ago, Crimson Assassin, Ultra Violet, Hawkhaven and I all went trashing. We decided to go trash some South Western Bell offices, but all of the ones we tried didn't have crap. Then I remembered a Bell office around where I work. Their dumpsters have a large stone wall around them, unlike all the other Bell offices in the area, so we decided to check it out. What we found in this particular Bell's trash has proved to be quite usefull, and yes, we will release a little of it for your viewing pleasure. I was lookout, Crim drove, and UV and Hawkhaven were the trashmen. UV was out of the car and over the wall the second we pulled up, while Hawkhaven waited on the other side of the wall to recieve flying bags of trash that UV would throw over. After a few loud clangs (stupid UV) two bags of trash came flying over the wall, as well as UV. We had the trash and UV in the car and were hauling ass back to UV's house to sort it out. The first bag of trash didn't prove to have much but memo's and notes, nothing useful, although we all did notice that most of the memo's were about a particular person named Gary Barber. We didn't know who this person was, except that he had been in surgery and was doing fine (we gathered this info from the memo's...). We were about halfway through the second bag of trash, sorting through mounds of sunflower seed shells (damn those Bell people and their nasty habits) when I came across a nice, neat stack of white paper. I pulled it out all in one chunk. As well as the next nice, neat, stack of paper. These two stacks of paper turned out to be a complete alphabetical listing of every SWB Customer Service Operator in the area. Among the info on these lists (two seperate lists, A-Z) were Name, D.O.B., Social Security _#, Home Address, Home Phone, Work Phone, Operator _#, and paycheck _#. As well as one "Gary Barber." Since there was only one hardcopy of the list, we went to our now deemed "most useful 24-hour store," Kinkos Copy Shop. We ran off 3 copys, one for me, one for Crim, one for Hawkhaven, and UV got to keep the originals because he scaled the wall (and had no money for copies). Eventually, I plan to release the FULL LIST of this directory (which was dated about a month before the date that we found it), but for now, you'll just have to settle for a few pages... And yes, we included the page that just happens to have Gary Barber on it: Call SWB Customer Service and see how he's doing these days... Crimson Assassin, Ultra Violet, 0mega and myself went out with Fizban and Seven. We told Fiz and 7 to meet us at UV's house, while we did a quick mission on the Bell in our area before we left for UV's area, and Fiz and 7 took off to meet up with us later. Crimson Assassin was driving, so we pulled into the Taco Bell next to the Southwestern Bell (joining parking lots... neato) and he backed into the parking spot right next to the Bell dumpster... UV, 0mega and myself got out of the car and began going through the dumpster while Crim opened the back of his car. 0mega and I grabbed a trash bag each and put them in the car. When we turned around, UV was INSIDE the SWB Ford Escort that just happened to be sitting there, unlocked. When we all got back into the car and drove a little ways away, we stopped because UV was all pumped about something. We went through what he found, which wasn't that impressive, until the last item he had found... the car keys. Ultra Violet insisted on going back to try to steal the SWB car, so the rest of us parked a little ways away (still in the Taco Bell parking lot) while UV ran back to the car and hopped in... In little more than a second, UV had the car started and backed it out of it's parking place. That's when the phun started... After UV backed it out and stopped to shift gears, the car died. UV started it back up, tried again, and it died. That's when we realized that UV can't drive a stick. UV tried again and again, for a good 5 minutes before Crim had to go drag him out of the car before he got caught, becuase the Taco Bell manager was acting strange and picked up the phone. When we were all back in the car heading to UV's with the trash that we got there (but no car), UV told us that he couldn't get the keys out of the stearing column, which in effect TOLD the Bell employees that someone was messing with their car, as if it being in a different place than where they left it didn't tip them off. Needless to say, the next day there were THREE cars in the parking lot, the original Bell car in the middle, with people in the other two. Like we were gonna come back. First you will need a house with two phone lines, a terminal, a voice line, and this number. 1-800-735-2989. You call this with the terminal. After you connect some one will ask you what is the number you wish to call. You will tell them the number for the other line...Then after the operator calls this number, you can chat back in forth with each other for hours. (this is where it gets fun)..No matter what you type the operator has to say it, and what ever you tell her she has to type it. Now remeber kiddies don't abuse this or it will be taken away...
